Site Safety Officer
Position Summary:
TribeWorks is seeking a committed and community-minded Site Safety Officer (SSO) to join our team in supporting safe and respectful development on Indigenous lands. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about workplace safety and brings an understanding of Indigenous communities, values, and perspectives. The SSO plays a critical role in protecting workers and fostering a culture of health, safety, and respect on all project sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments on job sites.
- Lead safety orientations, toolbox talks, and cultural safety briefings for all workers and subcontractors.
- Promote a culture of care and accountability aligned with both occupational health standards and community values.
- Ensure all workers have and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Monitor compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, Indigenous governance protocols, and employer safety policies.
- Investigate and report any incidents, injuries, or near-misses with follow-up recommendations.
- Maintain detailed safety logs and documentation.
- Collaborate with Indigenous workers and Elders to identify community-specific safety concerns.
- Support Indigenous apprentices and new hires in understanding site safety expectations.
- Participate in Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee (JOHSC) meetings.
Qualifications:
- Indigenous applicants strongly encouraged to apply.
- Certification or training in Occupational Health & Safety (e.g., NCSO, CSO, or equivalent).
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience in a safety-related role, preferably in construction or industrial settings.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous protocols, respect for traditional knowledge, and commitment to reconciliation.
- Clear and confident communicator with strong leadership and organizational skills.
- Valid First Aid Level 1 or higher (preferred).
- Familiarity with BC Occupational Health & Safety Regulation and environmental best practices.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time, field-based role across projects located on or near Indigenous lands.
- Occasional travel to remote work sites.
- May include extended hours or weekend work, depending on project timelines.
- Outdoor, all-weather work environment with standard use of PPE.
